Swell Time

Moving forward, just not sure where we're going, but at least we're having a swell time when we do it.

How committed are you?

Just a few weeks into the New Year is the time when people begin to give up on their resolutions. After a few weeks of writing every day, going to the gym, eating right, drinking less takes commitment and work.

 

My Oxford American College Dictionary defines commitment as the act of committing or the state of being committed. Dedication; application. A pledge or undertaking. An act or pledging or setting aside something.

 

The words seem pretty simple but the act is where things get complicated.

 

Watching a morning talk shows you can get lots of advice from experts on how to stay committed to your resolutions. However, sometimes you won’t know what a word means until you actually experience it.

 

Commitment was just another word for me too. I began to understand commitment and what it means to be dedicated to an undertaking through sports.

In 2008, Jim and I hit a rough patch, one of those moments where you aren’t sure if you will last. That was when I signed up to run my first half marathon. I had barely run a 5k before that. It would have been easy to quit; losing a little money to Disney was something I’m familiar with. But it wasn’t about the money; it was about doing something that I believed in. So I ran and trained. I had no idea what I was doing but I was not going to let that stop me. My commitment to run the race never waned, not even when I was woefully unprepared for the weather. 13.1 miles after the start I crossed the finish line.

Yoga and surfing also give me clarity on commitment. When I do yoga I have to remove distraction and commit fully to a pose. When I let distraction slip in and my mind isn’t committed that is when my Vrksasana falls. In surfing I have to fully commit to a wave. When I don’t and Mother Nature is kind I slide off the back of the wave and when Mother Nature is not so friendly she takes me on a tumble.

Commitment is about every day not just what you resolve to do at the beginning of the year. Sports gave me a framework and understanding of commitment but I have to be able to apply it every day in all areas of my life. I realize now if I can’t commit to something it either isn’t that important to me or I am willing to let it go.
